Irish announce tax on Single Use

25th September 2020 by John Reeves

The Irish Government has confirmed it will introduce a tax on all single use drinks cups, both hot and cold in January 2022. They have also confirmed that they are planning to eliminate single use as an option from certain towns, universities, commercial centres and even ban them from use at large scale events.

Although not yet confirmed, it is anticipated the levy will be set at €0.25 per cup. Additionally, it is proposed that Ireland will follow the French Government in prohibiting single use cups being used inside cafe’s, restaurants and bars.

Ireland has confirmed it fully intends to implement the EU Directive on SUP by July 2021 which will ultimately mean that cutlery, plates and straws will no longer be permitted and consumption reduction targets will be implemented for food and drinks containers as well as a ban on EPS food containers and cups.
