Global Drinks Brands back DRS

29th September 2020 by John Reeves

Some of the world’s largest and most iconic drinks brands have made a call for a national Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) to be implemented across all European member states.

Coca Cola, Pepsi, Nestle and others have combined to back the introduction of a well managed and well designed DRS which can help EU member states achieve their recycling targets as well as providing the manufacturers with an uncontaminated supply of PET which in turn gives access to RPET.

This closed loop type project helps to reduce the amount of virgin material used which will also contributes to the member states achieving their climate objectives.

The EU’s Single Use Plastics (SUP) Directive, requires that by 2029, 90% of plastic beverage bottles are collected. It also stipulates that PET bottles must contain 25% recycled content by 2025 – rising to 30% in 2030.

To meet these targets, urgent action is necessary, the fact that the major drinks brands are now committed to delivering DRS is a major step forward and should be welcomed by all.
